Ibrahim Pasha was born in 1789, eldest son of Muhammad Ali, the Ottoman-appointed ruler who turned Egypt into a dynasty. He took his first military command as a teenager in the army his father built. Over decades he led Egyptian forces to what historians call some of the most devastating defeats ever inflicted on the Ottomans, victories that earned him a reputation among the era's great commanders.
