Roman emperor in 251
Roman emperor for maybe a month in 251, elevated by the man who might have killed him. His father and brother died in a Gothic ambush; the successor needed legitimacy and made Hostilian co-emperor, then Hostilian was dead — plague or murder, no one quite knows.
Gaius Valens Hostilianus Messius Quintus was born to the emperor Decius and Herennia Etruscilla, raised in the shadow of a throne his family wouldn't hold long. Decius made him caesar in 250. In 251, Decius and Hostilian's brother Herennius Etruscus were killed at the Battle of Abritus, ambushed by Goths. The legions proclaimed Trebonianus Gallus emperor. Gallus elevated Hostilian to co-emperor almost immediately — his own son Volusianus became caesar — a bid for continuity or cover. Hostilian died soon after, either from plague or at Gallus's hand. The empire moved on.
