The general who erased a dynasty. Horemheb rose from common birth to command Egypt's armies, then seized the throne and systematically dismantled the monuments of the pharaohs he'd served — rewriting history to close the Amarna chapter.
Horemheb commanded Egypt's military under Tutankhamun and Ay, the last fragile rulers of a dynasty fractured by Akhenaten's religious upheaval. When Ay died around 1319 BC, the general took the throne himself, claiming no royal blood beyond a disputed marriage to Ay's daughter. He ruled for at least 14 years, adopting the title "Mighty Bull, Ready in Plans" and setting about restabilizing a country still reeling from the Amarna Period.
