Biography

About

Born in Tokyo to a military family of samurai descent in 1884, Tojo graduated from the Imperial Japanese Army Academy in 1905 and rose through the ranks as a member of the Control Faction. As chief of staff of the Kwantung Army in 1937, he led operations during the invasion of China; by 1940 he was Minister of the Army, advocating alliance with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Appointed Prime Minister by Emperor Hirohito in October 1941, he mobilized Japan for total war, enforcing strict censorship and suppressing dissent through the Kempeitai while pursuing the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity…
