Biography

About

Born February 29, 1860, Hollerith was a German-American statistician who saw that holes in cardboard could encode information a machine could read. He patented his electromechanical tabulating system in 1884, inaugurating the age of mechanized binary code and semiautomatic data processing. The company he founded merged with others in 1911 to form the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, renamed International Business Machines in 1924. His concept held dominion over data processing for nearly a century, and IBM became one of the largest companies of the twentieth. Hollerith died November 17,…
