Born Henri Destraz on 14 December 1940, Dès won Poland's Sopot International Song Festival in 1969 and represented Switzerland at Eurovision 1970 with "Retour", landing fourth place. That same year he released his first album, also called Retour, and founded Disques Mary-Josée, named after his wife. He tried Eurovision again in 1976 with "C'est pour la vie" - another fourth-place finish, this time in the Swiss national final - but by then his trajectory had shifted toward children's music, where he built an empire of songs that made him immensely popular across Francophone Europe. On 15 March 2019, at 78, he joined striking school children in Lausanne protesting climate change.
