He turned the Mediterranean into an Ottoman lake. Hayreddin Barbarossa commanded fleets that broke Spain's grip on North Africa and crushed the Holy League at sea, making him the architect of Ottoman naval supremacy when it mattered most.
Born on Lesbos around the turn of the 16th century, Khizr started as a corsair working under his elder brother Oruç Reis. In 1516 they took Algiers from Spain; Oruç declared himself Sultan but died in 1518, and Khizr inherited both his brother's realm and his nickname—Barbarossa, "Redbeard." He also took the name Hayreddin. By 1529 he'd seized the Peñón of Algiers from the Spaniards. Four years later Suleiman the Magnificent made him Kapudan Pasha, grand admiral of the Ottoman Navy.
