Born in Tokyo in 1941, Miyazaki started as an inbetween artist at Toei Animation in 1963, working his way through key animation and television direction before sketching the manga Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in 1982 and directing its 1984 film adaptation. He co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985, then spent the next decades writing and directing Laputa: Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Porco Rosso - all commercial hits in Japan. Princess Mononoke in 1997 became the country's highest-grossing film and opened Western markets; Spirited Away in 2001 took that box-office crown and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. He announced retirement in 2013 after The Wind Rises, then came back a decade later with The Boy and the Heron, which won him a second Oscar in 2024.
