The founder of the Ismaili state of Alamut and the Imam of the Nizari Ismailis (1081–1124)
The medieval Persian scholar who seized Alamut Castle and built the Nizari Ismaili state—and whose disciplined, shadowy order of followers gave the world the word "assassin."
Born around 1050, Hasan-i Sabbah studied mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy—reportedly alongside Omar Khayyam. In 1090 he took control of Alamut Castle in the mountains of Persia and established the Nizari Ismaili sect and its military arm, the Order of Assassins. From that fortress he ruled until his death on 12 June 1124, commanding a network that would haunt the imagination of the West for centuries. Marco Polo later immortalized him and his successors under a single epithet: the Old Man of the Mountain.
