Carthaginian general (245–207 BC)
Hannibal's brother, the Carthaginian general who tried to reinforce him in Italy — and died trying. His failure at the Metaurus River in 207 BC sealed Carthage's fate in the Second Punic War.
Hasdrubal Barca was born in 245 BC, son of Hamilcar Barca, into Carthage's leading military family. He commanded forces during the Second Punic War while his brother Hannibal ravaged Italy. In 207 BC he led an army over the Alps to join Hannibal and turn the war decisively against Rome. He never made it. Roman forces intercepted and killed him at the Metaurus River on 22 June 207 BC — his severed head was later thrown into Hannibal's camp as a message.
