Mago Barca was born into Carthage's most powerful military dynasty, the Barcids, though his early years left almost no record; notably, he was absent from the 228 BC ambush that killed his father Hamilcar. As the Second Punic War opened, he took command alongside his brothers Hannibal and Hasdrubal, leading Carthaginian forces through Iberia and deep into Roman Italy. For over a decade he moved troops across hostile ground, pressing the war into the heart of enemy territory while Rome scrambled to contain the Barcid advance.
