A German philosopher who spent decades arguing that understanding itself is less about method than about conversation — that to interpret a text or a person is to let your assumptions collide with theirs until something new emerges.

Biography

About

Hans-Georg Gadamer was born in Germany on 11 February 1900 and worked within the continental philosophical tradition for most of the twentieth century. In 1960 he published Truth and Method, a dense treatise on hermeneutics that became his defining work and reset how scholars thought about interpretation. The book proposed that meaning arises not from detached analysis but from a kind of dialogue between interpreter and object, a fusion of horizons across time. He continued teaching and writing for decades after. Gadamer died on 13 March 2002, a month past his 102nd birthday.
