Born in October 1955, Haitham bin Tariq spent years as Minister of Heritage and Culture under Sultan Qaboos bin Said, his cousin, who ruled Oman from 1970 until his death. When Qaboos died in January 2020, Haitham acceded to the throne and became Prime Minister, taking charge of a country transformed from isolation into a stable, modern state under his predecessor's long hand.
