King of Norway
A tenth-century Norwegian king who tried to convert a nation of pagans to Christianity — and learned that crowns don't always move hearts.
Haakon Haraldsson came to the throne in 934, stepping into a kingdom still bound to the old gods. For twenty-seven years he ruled Norway, pushing Christianity into a land not yet ready to receive it. The project defined his reign: a collision between royal will and entrenched belief. He died in 961, the conversion incomplete, the tension unresolved.
