About

Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born in Providence, Rhode Island on August 20, 1890, and watched his family's wealth evaporate after his grandfather's death, following years when his father had been institutionalized in 1893. His mother was institutionalized in 1919, leaving him with reduced means. A critical letter he wrote in 1913 to a pulp magazine pulled him into speculative fiction, and he married Sonia Greene in 1924, moving to New York City. The city wore him down mentally and financially; he returned to Providence in 1926 and spent his final eleven years writing. That last stretch produc…
