The only composer to win back-to-back Oscars for original score in the 21st century, Santaolalla built a film career on the sound of a single stringed instrument and a refusal to learn notation.

About this person

Born in Argentina in 1951, Santaolalla started young, founding the band Arco Iris in 1967 and helping shape rock nacional before the military junta drove him to Los Angeles in 1978. After a sabbatical in the 1980s, he returned to become the architect of rock en español, producing over 100 artists through his label Surco Records - including Café Tacuba's 1994 album Re, Julieta Venegas's Bueninvento, and Juanes's "La Camisa Negra". His 1998 solo album Ronroco caught the ear of filmmakers, launching a second act in scoring: Amores perros, 21 Grams, The Motorcycle Diaries, then consecutive Academy Awards for Brokeback Mountain in 2005 and Babel in 2006. He composed The Last of Us in 2013 and its 2020 sequel, adapted both for the 2023 HBO series, and in October 2024 scored a live performance of the 1931 Spanish Dracula at the Los Angeles Opera. He works alone, never learned to read music, and calls his minimalism parkour - the same math before the leap.
