Tenth Sikh guru (1661–1708)
He became the Sikh spiritual leader at nine after the Mughal emperor executed his father, and spent his life transforming a religious community into an armed order. He lost all four sons—two in battle, two to execution—before dying at forty-one.
Born Gobind Das on 22 December 1666, he was formally installed as the tenth Sikh Guru in 1675 when Aurangzeb beheaded his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur. A warrior and poet, he founded the Khalsa in 1699—the Sikh warrior community bound by the Five Ks, the articles of faith worn at all times. He authored the Dasam Granth, hymns now woven into Sikh prayer and ritual, and finalized the Guru Granth Sahib as Sikhism's eternal scripture and successor Guru.
