About this person

Guo Wengui ranked 74th on the Hurun China Rich List in 2014 with assets estimated at $2.6 billion, but left for the United States that same year as an anti-corruption campaign swept up his associates, including top intelligence official Ma Jian. In America he built a public identity as a whistleblower against the Chinese Communist Party, launching media ventures with Steve Bannon between 2018 and 2020 - G News and GTV Media Group - that drew criticism for spreading misinformation. In 2021 he settled with the SEC for $539 million in refunds and penalties over illegal fundraising. The FBI arrested him in March 2023 on charges of defrauding investors and supporters, and in July 2024 a jury in the Southern District of New York found him guilty on fraud and money-laundering-related charges. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison in June 2026.
