About this person

Gloria Marie Steinem was born March 25, 1934, and spent her early career as a journalist before publishing "After Black Power, Women's Liberation" in 1969, which brought her national attention and positioned her as a feminist leader. In 1971 she co-founded both the National Women's Political Caucus, which trained women for elected and appointed office, and the Women's Action Alliance, which supported feminist activists and legislation until 1997. She became a columnist for New York magazine and co-founder of Ms. magazine, traveling internationally as an organizer and lecturer while serving as a media spokeswoman on equality issues. In 1992 she helped establish Take Our Daughters to Work Day, and in 2005 co-founded the Women's Media Center with Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan to amplify women's voices in media. She remained particularly prominent through the 1980s and early 1990s, and in 2015 walked across the Korean Demilitarized Zone alongside two Nobel Peace laureates and other peace activists, a journey from Pyongyang to South Korea. She died September 2, 2026.
