Born Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford in Canada on May 1, 1916, he became Glenn Ford and spent more than fifty years as a Hollywood fixture. The 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s made him a box-office anchor, with noir and drama his strongest suits but Westerns and comedies earning him three Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy - he won for Pocketful of Miracles in 1961. Five of his films landed in the National Film Registry: Gilda in 1946, The Big Heat in 1953, Blackboard Jungle in 1955, 3:10 to Yuma in 1957, and Superman in 1978, where he played Jonathan Kent.
