Italian composer and violinist (1692-1770)
A Baroque violinist whose most famous sonata came with a legend: he claimed the Devil appeared in a dream and played it for him, note for note—hence the name that stuck.
Giuseppe Tartini was born in Pirano in the Republic of Venice on 8 April 1692. He built a career as both composer and violinist through the Baroque era, writing prolifically—over a hundred pieces for his instrument, most of them concertos. The work that outlasted all the others is his Violin Sonata in G Minor, known as the Devil's Trill Sonata. He died on 26 February 1770.
