Italian politician (1453-1478)
Second son of Florence's ruling family, killed at 24 in a cathedral ambush that became one of Renaissance Italy's most infamous political murders.
Giuliano de' Medici was born 28 October 1453, second son of Piero de' Medici and Lucrezia Tornabuoni. He ruled Florence alongside his older brother Lorenzo the Magnificent, the two presenting a studied contrast: where Lorenzo cultivated the image of arts patron, Giuliano played the handsome, athletic golden boy. The division of labor worked until 26 April 1478, when the Pazzi conspiracy unfolded and Giuliano was murdered, cut down in a plot that bore his family's enemies' name and ended his life at twenty-four.
