Italian poet and literary critic (1835-1907)
The first Italian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded in 1906 for what the Swedish Academy called the "creative energy, freshness of style, and lyrical force" of his verse. Modern Italy claimed him as its official national poet.
Giosuè Alessandro Giuseppe Carducci was born on 27 July 1835 and built his career as poet, writer, literary critic, and teacher. His influence grew until he was regarded as the official national poet of modern Italy—a living embodiment of the nation's literary identity. In 1906, he became the first Italian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy cited not only his deep learning and critical research, but above all the creative energy, freshness of style, and lyrical force that characterized his poetic masterpieces. He died on 16 February 1907.
