Luigia "Gina" Lollobrigida became one of the highest-profile European actresses of the 1950s and 1960s, an international sex symbol dubbed "the most beautiful woman in the world." She won the Henrietta Award at the 18th Golden Globe Awards during a film career that made her a fixture of Hollywood's Golden Age. As acting roles thinned, she pivoted to photojournalism and scored an exclusive interview with Fidel Castro in the 1970s. Later she became an active supporter of Italian and Italian-American causes, receiving the National Italian American Foundation's Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. In 2013 she sold her jewellery collection and donated nearly $5 million to stem-cell therapy research. She died in January 2023, among the last surviving high-profile international stars of her era.
