Friedrich Wilhelm Waldemar Fromm was born 8 October 1888 and rose through the German Army to become a Generaloberst. For most of World War II he served as Commander in Chief of the Replacement Army, overseeing training and personnel replacement for combat divisions — a vast bureaucratic machine behind the front lines. On 20 July 1944, conspirators within his own headquarters attempted to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Fromm knew of the plot but took no action either to support or expose it. When the attempt failed, that inaction became his death sentence: he was executed 12 March 1945.
