Born in Oviedo to a working-class family, Alonso started karting at seven and tore through junior formulae to reach F1 with Minardi in 2001. He joined Renault in 2003, became the youngest polesitter and race winner that year, then took back-to-back championships in 2005 and 2006 - Spain's first world champion, aged 24. A tense single season at McLaren in 2007 saw him finish one point off the title before returning to Renault, where he won the controversial 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. Four years at Ferrari brought three runner-up finishes to Vettel - by four points in 2010, three in 2012, and again in 2013 - but no third crown. A winless 2014 sent him back to McLaren under Honda power from 2015 to 2018, a fruitless stretch that ended in his first retirement. He spent two years in sportscars, winning the World Endurance Championship and Le Mans twice with Toyota, then returned to F1 with Alpine in 2021 and moved to Aston Martin in 2023, where he scored his 100th podium and became the first driver to start 400 Grands Prix in 2024.
