Italian automobile designer and manufacturer (1881–1947)
He built cars that looked like sculpture and drove like fury — machines so singular that "Bugatti" became shorthand for a certain kind of uncompromising beauty wrapped around speed.
Ettore Arco Isidoro Bugatti was born on 15 September 1881, straddling Italian roots and a future in France. In 1909 he founded Automobiles E. Bugatti in Molsheim, then a German town in Alsace, and spent the next decades turning out automobiles that married art to engineering with an intensity few rivals could match. The region's borders shifted, and so did Bugatti's citizenship: France claimed him officially in 1946, a year before he died in Paris on 21 August 1947. He's buried in Dorlisheim, in the Alsace that finally settled as French.
