Born 6 May 1982, Murray came up through New Zealand's ruthless rowing pipeline and found his defining partnership in the coxless pair, a boat class where he and his crewmate became untouchable. Between 2009 and 2016 they won six straight World Championship golds in the pair, added two more world titles in other boats, and took Olympic gold at London 2012 and Rio 2016 without a single defeat. In 2012 he set the world-best time in the coxless pair; two years later he did it again in the coxed pair. Both marks still stand. He retired with the record intact.
