About this person

Liam Lawson started karting at six in Pukekohe under the mentorship of Ken Smith, a three-time New Zealand Grand Prix winner. He won the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship as a privateer in 2015, then spent the next four years finishing second in Australian F4, ADAC F4, and Euroformula Open before finally winning the 2019 Toyota Racing Series with M2. Red Bull signed him to their junior program that same year. He placed third in Formula 2 with Carlin in 2022, and finished runner-up in both the 2021 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (in a controversial finale alongside Alex Albon) and the 2023 Super Formula Championship. After two years as a reserve, Lawson debuted in Formula One at the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix, filling in for an injured Daniel Ricciardo across five races and scoring his first points in Singapore. He replaced Ricciardo full-time at Racing Bulls from the 2024 United States Grand Prix onward, then was promoted to Red Bull's lead team to partner Verstappen for 2025 - only to be demoted after two rounds, returning to Racing Bulls on a contract through at least 2026.
