About

Born Emanuelis Levinas in Lithuania on 12 January 1906, he came of age in a century that would test every premise about human obligation. He worked across Jewish philosophy, existentialism, and phenomenology, but his through-line was singular: the insistence that ethics precedes ontology, that the face of another person makes a claim before any metaphysics can. That reversal — relationship before being — became his signature move. He died in France on 25 December 1995, having redrawn the map.
