About this person
Bonino graduated from Bocconi in modern languages in 1972 and joined the Italian Radicals, a party mixing free-market economics with libertarian stances on moral questions. She went to the European Parliament, then became Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner under Santer from 1995 to 1999. Back in Rome she entered the Chamber of Deputies, served as Trade Minister in the second Prodi government from 2006 to 2008, and won a Senate seat representing Rome that same year. She held it until 2013, moved briefly to Foreign Minister under Letta, then returned to the Senate in 2018 after founding More Europe, a liberal federalist list built for that election. She left the chamber in 2022 and died four years later.
