About

Emily Greene Balch began as an academic in 1867, splitting her early career between sociology at Wellesley College and settlement work aimed at poor immigrants and juvenile delinquency. When World War I broke out in 1914, she pivoted entirely, linking up with Jane Addams and becoming a central leader of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, an organization she would steer from its Swiss base for most of her life. The shift cost her the faculty post but gained her a global platform. In 1946, thirty-two years after that first wartime turn, she shared the Nobel Peace Prize with…
