Holy Roman Empress consort (1691-1750)
She held the title of Holy Roman Empress longer than anyone else, and her daughters and granddaughters sat on nearly every throne that mattered in 18th-century Europe.
Born 28 August 1691, Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel married Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor, becoming empress, queen of Bohemia and Hungary, and archduchess of Austria. She was known for delicate beauty, but her real mark came through her children. Her daughter Maria Theresa became empress; her grandchildren included Joseph II and Leopold II, both Holy Roman Emperors, Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples and Sicily, and Marie Antoinette, Queen of France. She served as Holy Roman Empress longer than any woman before or after. She died 21 December 1750.
