Queen consort of Italy (1900-1946) and Servant of God; mother of Umberto II of Italy
A Montenegrin princess who became Italy's longest-reigning queen, then watched the monarchy collapse beneath her — now a candidate for sainthood in the Catholic Church.
Born 8 January 1873, Elena Petrović Njegoš was the daughter of King Nicholas I and Queen Milena of Montenegro. She married Victor Emmanuel III and became Queen of Italy on 29 July 1900, a title she held for nearly forty-six years. For a brief window she also carried the styles Empress of Ethiopia and Queen of the Albanians, both abandoned when her husband formally renounced them in 1943. The Italian monarchy fell on 9 May 1946, ending her reign. She died 28 November 1952. In 2001 the Vatican opened her beatification process, conferring on her the title Servant of God.
