Biography

About

A leader of the 1897 Cretan Revolt, Venizelos secured his island's autonomy and later its union with Greece, leading the Theriso revolt in 1905. Invited to Athens in 1909 to break a political deadlock, he became prime minister and overhauled the constitution, the economy, and the military. His diplomacy won Greece entry to the Balkan League; the wars of 1912–1913 liberated Macedonia, Epirus, and most of the Aegean, doubling the nation's territory and population. In World War I he brought Greece in with the Allies, but his foreign policy collided with the nonaligned King Constantine I, fracturi…
