Biography

About

Albert Edward, called Bertie, was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. His mother's mistrust kept him on the sidelines for decades, and he filled the time with ceremony and travel — a popular 1860 tour of North America, an 1875 visit to India, a reputation for pleasure that Victoria despised. He married Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863; they had six children. When Victoria died in 1901, he inherited the throne at last. As Edward VII, he pushed for modernisation of the Home Fleet and Army after the Boer War, restored royal pageantry, and widened the circles royalty moved in.…
