Edvard Hagerup Grieg was born in Bergen on 15 June 1843, the son of a city that would later claim him as its most famous resident. A composer and pianist, he drew on Norwegian folk traditions and wove them into his work, carrying local melodies onto international stages at a time when national identity and classical music were fusing across Europe.
