Born into a well-connected upper-class French family on 23 January 1832, Manet turned away from the naval path his parents imagined and disappeared into paint. In 1863 he unveiled The Luncheon on the Grass, followed two years later by Olympia — both detonated outrage from critics and the Academy of Fine Arts, but progressive artists saw them as the breakthrough into a new style, Impressionism. Those works are now considered watershed paintings that mark the start of modern art.
