About this person
Édouard Balladur was born 2 May 1929, a center-right technocrat who identified as Gaullist and served as finance minister from 1986 to 1988 under Jacques Chirac. When Chirac declined to return as prime minister in 1993, President François Mitterrand appointed Balladur instead, a tenure from 29 March 1993 to 17 May 1995 defined by France's role in the Rwandan genocide and entanglement in the Karachi affair. Once considered Chirac's protégé, Balladur turned and ran against him in the 1995 presidential election, finishing third. He won a National Assembly seat in 2002, became a mentor to Nicolas Sarkozy, and retired from politics in 2007. He died 31 August 2026.
