About this person
Dmytro Volodymyrovych Karpenko rose through Ukraine's air force during peacetime and into war. He made major general in 2012, then served as Chief of Staff and First Deputy Commander of Air Command West from 2018 to 2022 - years that spanned the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war. In 2022, as the conflict intensified, he took command of Air Command South, a position overseeing air operations in one of the most contested regions of the country. He remains in that role today.
