Danish-German organist and composer (1637–1707)
A Danish organist whose evening concerts were so compelling that a young Bach walked over 250 miles to hear him play — and stayed four months instead of the four weeks he'd requested.
Born around 1637 as Diderich Hansen Buxtehude, he became the defining figure of the North German organ school in the middle Baroque era. His work spanned vocal and instrumental forms, and his compositional style left a mark deep enough to shape both Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. By the time of his death on 9 May 1707, he was recognized as one of the 17th century's most important composers.
