He bought the Roman Empire at auction. In March 193, after the Praetorian Guard murdered the previous emperor, Julianus outbid a rival and walked out owning the throne — a transaction so naked it became shorthand for imperial rot.
Marcus Didius Julianus spent decades climbing the Roman cursus honorum: he governed Dalmatia and Germania Inferior, crushed the Chauci and Chatti in battle, and earned a consulship in 175 alongside Pertinax. Commodus later demoted him. When the Praetorian Guard assassinated Pertinax in March 193 and staged an auction for the emperorship, Julianus won. The purchase triggered immediate civil war.
