He wrote the language that wrote the world. C underpins operating systems, databases, and embedded chips in nearly every device you touch - and he co-created Unix, the blueprint for Linux, macOS, and the internet's server backbone.

About this person

Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie was born September 9, 1941. Working at Bell Labs with Ken Thompson, he co-created the B programming language, then refined it into C - a lean, powerful language that became the foundation of modern software. Together they built Unix, an operating system whose design principles would reshape computing for decades. Ritchie died around October 12, 2011, a week after Steve Jobs, with far less fanfare and infinitely more code running in his wake.
