About this person
Born around 350 BC in Phalerum, Athens' ancient port, Demetrius studied under Theophrastus and possibly Aristotle, joining the early Peripatetic school. Cassander, King of Macedon, appointed him to govern Athens as sole ruler, a position he held for ten years. He reformed the legal system while maintaining oligarchic control favorable to his patron. In 307 BC his enemies drove him out. He fled first to Thebes, then after 297 BC to Alexandria's court, where he turned from statecraft to scholarship, writing extensively on history, rhetoric, and literary criticism. He died around 280 BC, his career a rare arc from philosophy student to autocrat to exiled writer.
