12th century Italian nobleman and major participant in the Third Crusade
He married into the throne of Jerusalem during the Third Crusade, held the crown by right of his wife for over a year, and was formally elected king only days before an assassin ended it.
Conrad of Montferrat was born around 1146, a nobleman who became one of the major figures of the Third Crusade. On 24 November 1190, he married Isabella I of Jerusalem, making him de facto King of Jerusalem by virtue of the union, though no official election followed. He inherited the title of eighth Marquess of Montferrat in 1191. In 1192, after holding power through marriage for more than a year, he was at last officially elected king. Days later, on 28 April 1192, he was killed.
