About this person

Born in Birmingham in 1954, Rice came of age in the Jim Crow South before earning a PhD in international studies from the University of Denver in 1981. She advised George H. W. Bush on Soviet affairs during the collapse of the USSR and German reunification, then served as Stanford's provost from 1993 to 1999. George W. Bush tapped her as national security advisor in 2000 - the first woman in that role - and elevated her to Secretary of State in 2005, where she championed Transformational Diplomacy aimed at spreading democratic governance, a doctrine tested by Hamas's electoral victory in Palestine and persistent authoritarianism among U.S.-backed regimes. She returned to Stanford in 2009 and in 2020 became director of the Hoover Institution, where she remains.
