A Ptolemaic princess who married four Syrian kings in a row — three of them brothers — and ended up ruling Syria herself until an Armenian king besieged her in a coastal fortress and had her executed.
Born around 130 BC to Ptolemy VIII and Cleopatra III, Cleopatra Selene spent her early years as a chess piece in her mother's power games. In 115 BC, Cleopatra III forced one son to divorce and installed Selene as the new queen consort; when that brother was expelled, she likely married the replacement brother too. By 102 BC her mother shipped her north to Syria as a diplomatic bride for Antiochus VIII. When he was assassinated in 96 BC, she married his brother and rival Antiochus IX; when he died in 95 BC, she married Antiochus IX's son Antiochus X, who vanished from record around 92 BC. She…
