Claudia Sheinbaum earned her doctorate in energy engineering from UNAM and spent years publishing on sustainable development, contributing to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change before politics pulled her in. She joined the PRD in 1989 and served as environment secretary under López Obrador in Mexico City from 2000 to 2006, then followed him out of the party a decade later to help build Morena. She won the Tlalpan borough mayorship in 2015, then the capital's top job in 2018, navigating the pandemic and a deadly metro collapse before resigning in 2023 to run for president. She defeated Xóchitl Gálvez in a landslide and took office in 2024 with a supermajority, immediately enacting constitutional reforms to enshrine social programs, reverse energy privatization, peg minimum wage hikes above inflation, and introduce universal healthcare. Forbes ranked her the fifth most powerful woman in the world in 2025.
