Born in Tepetitán, Tabasco in 1953, López Obrador started as a PRI member in 1976, directing indigenous education programs before jumping to the PRD in 1989. He lost the Tabasco governorship in 1994 but won Mexico City's top job in 2000, where crime reduction and social spending built his national base. The 2006 presidential race ended in a disputed loss to Felipe Calderón - irregularities confirmed, recount denied, streets filled. He founded Morena in 2011, lost again in 2012, then swept to power in 2018 with a mandate to reverse decades of liberalization. His six years brought public reinvestment and progressive reforms, drawing praise for centering the working class and criticism for democratic erosion and pandemic mishandling. He handed power to his chosen successor Claudia Sheinbaum in September 2024 and walked away from public life.
