Norwegian diplomat and Nobel Peace Prize recipient (1869-1938)
A Norwegian historian who became one of the twentieth century's most committed advocates for internationalism — the belief that nations could learn to cooperate rather than destroy each other.
Christian Lous Lange was born on 17 September 1869 in Norway, trained as a historian and teacher, and moved into political science. Over the decades he emerged as a leading voice for internationalism, both in theory and practice, arguing for cooperation across borders at a time when the world kept tearing itself apart. He spent his career building the intellectual scaffolding for a different kind of politics. He died on 11 December 1938, two years into his seventieth year.
